A Valentine’s Day Table

Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentin, no matter how you say it, causes anxiety whether you have a significant other or not. The pressure to buy flowers, candy, and cards, (or be excited for those receiving them) can be daunting during this Hallmark holiday. If you’re single, you are most likely trying to lay low until this one day of the year passes.

I’ve always liked having friends over for dinner: singles, couples… its just a good night to get together, make fun of the holiday, and/or admire your loved one. Having a dinner party beats the pre fixe, overpriced, night-out with your date or ordering-in and hiding under your cashmere throw. When having friends over, I like to keep the theme subtle with a comforting winter night’s dinner, lots of champagne and (of course!) chocolate…after all it is Valentine’s!

 Here is a fun table setting idea that keeps everything simple with a black and white motif and a pop of red for fun. I thought we would be a little naughty this year after coming off that forever long retrograde. I went to Paper Source and picked up these sweet elongated hearts. I suppose you can cut them out yourself if you find a template online, or want to free hand the whole thing. We looked online and found that the classic writing on candy hearts looks very much like Helvetica. Where the naughty part comes in, is what you actually print on the hearts. The only limit is your own imagination! Placing the knife and fork as a criss-cross behind the heart reminds me of a heart pierced by cupids arrow. We printed the menus on cover weight paper also found at Paper Source and cut it into a band to hold everything together.

Whether you feel naughty or nice this Valentine’s holiday, have fun with it and try including friends to spread the love.
